Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and friend passed from this earth to sit with God on Tuesday February 5, 2013.

She was born Elizabeth Edith LaVarnway to parents Henry and Edith Gebo LaVarnway on a farm, January 5, 1920 in Beekmantown, Clinton County, NY. She so enjoyed growing up in the Adirondack Mountains and continued, all her life to love the mountains, lakes and nature of the area.

After graduating from Cadyville High School, Cadyville, NY, Betty moved to Baltimore, MD where she worked as a clerk and stenographer for Martin Aircraft during WWII, supporting the war effort.

On December 11, 1945, after his return from the European Campaign, Betty married Gilbert "Gib" Johnson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dannemora, NY and moved to Liberty, Union County, Indiana. During their marriage, they owned and operated Johnson's Grocery Store and Garage in Roseburg from 1950-1959. She worked as a cashier at Bartel's Hoosier Department Store in Richmond and was working at the time of the 1968 downtown Richmond explosion. She then became employed as a bookkeeper at Hamilton Harris in Richmond. She and Gib also owned and operated Johnson's Service in Liberty from 1972-1982.

Betty served over 30 years on the Union County Election Board. She was a life time member of the VFW Auxiliary and was District Officer and lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she belonged over 65 years. She received the Area 9 Lifetime Award for her volunteer efforts . She was also a life member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing scrabble, euchre, bridge and loved her daily crossword puzzles. She began painting in her late 70's and received numerous awards for her paintings. She was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Liberty.

After her husband's death in 1983, Betty dedicated her life as a volunteer, helping disabled veterans and visiting people in the Liberty community who lived alone or in the nursing home.

She is survived by five children, Gail (Tim) Nuss, of Richmond, Neal (Sandra) Johnson of West College Corner, IN, Eric Johnson of Liberty, Jay (Ann) Johnson of Hamilton, OH, and Nicki (Delbert) Hertel of Liberty; five grandchildren, Shawn (Laura) Johnson, Shad Smith, Rodney (Andrea) Smith, Abby (Howard) Curry and Cyrus Johnson; and five great grandchildren, Mick Johnson, Kaitlyn Johnson, Olivia Smith, Jake Smith and Gabe Smith.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Donald LaVarnway and Harold LaVarnway and two sisters, Marion Flatt and Geraldine Baker.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Liberty, on Friday February 22, 2013 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Reidman officiating.

Friends and family may visit at the church for one hour prior to the time of the Mass.

Burial will be at West Point Cemetery in Liberty.

Memorial contributions may be made to Post 122 American Legion Auxiliary in Liberty or to Post 1472 VFW Auxiliary in Liberty.
