There, he purchased a one-way bus ticket to Connersville where his parents had relocated after friends' spoke of the excellent employment opportunities here. While in Connersville, he joined the Indiana National Guard and served there for two years.

He was hired to work at the only full-time job he had in Connersville when he accepted a position at Rex, Inc., which later became Philco and then Ford Motor Co. where he was a warranty analyst. Later, he took over a refrigeration and air conditioning repair business which worked for 25 years.

On New Year's Eve 1953, he met Gertrude Faye Levi at the American Legion Reginald Fisher Post 1. On June 15, 1954, they were married in Cookeville, Tenn. by his uncle, Pastor Isom Rodgers. They enjoyed 68 years together until Mrs. Stanton passed away June 6, 2022.
