Joanna
Gettinger
May 16, 1928 — Apr 21, 2023
Joanna Mae Gettinger, age 94, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Friday April 21, 2023. Joanna was born on May 16, 1928, in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Marcus Benson and Marjorie Gault Jones.
She graduated from Connersville High School in 1946 and attended Earlham College for two years. She was united in marriage to Philip Neil Gettinger in Connersville on December 28, 1947. They enjoyed 33 years together prior to his passing in 1981. They were blessed with seven children.
As a devoted Christian, she was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the In and Around Club of Milton, Waterloo Extension Homemakers and a 78-year member of the Eastern Star.
Carrying on traditions set before her, Joanna enjoyed hosting not only her immediate family but also her extended family for holidays and special occasions. For many years, the Gettingers celebrated Thanksgiving at Joanna's farm. She could often be found enjoying a spirited game of Euchre, Rook, Scrabble and Bridge. She loved to travel. She hosted memorable family trips to Alaska, Cancun, Ireland, the UK, as well as many reunion trips to Gatlinburg. She also traveled to Germany, Norway, Australia, and various cruises. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, and, out of necessity, canning.
Those that will cherish her love and memory include her children, Mark Alan (Debby) Gettinger, Melinda Sue (Warren) Sudhoff, Steven Bruce (JoEllen) Gettinger, Douglas Neil (LuAnn) Gettinger, Philip Kevin (Stephanie) Gettinger, Bradley Dean (Terry) Gettinger and Krista Jo (Bruce) Jones; and a sister, Priscilla Thinnes. She will be greatly missed by her 35 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and neighborhood kids, many who looked to her as their second mom.
Besides her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Marcus Gault Jones and Benson Reid Jones and three grandchildren, Matthew, Adam and Allison Gettinger.
