In Loving Memory of Urban Monroe Charles, 73, who passed away on October 10, 2026, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana. Urban was born on February 25, 1953, to the late Everett and Mary Charles.
Urban graduated from Union County Short High School with the Class of 1971. Throughout his career, he worked at Purina, Natco and ultimately Dana Perfect Circle, where he worked as a machinist before retiring.
In his younger years, Urban enjoyed raising coon dogs and participating in coon-hunting competitions at Hannah’s Creek Conservation Club. It was there that he met many friends and created some of his fondest memories. Later in life, Urban developed a passion for playing billiards in a pool league. He faithfully practiced on his own pool table, which was marked with taped sight lines for specific shots. His dedication and skill made him a formidable opponent, and those who knew him often joked that he was pretty tough to beat at the pool table.
In 1991, Urban divorced from his first wife, Linda (Cornett) Charles. Together, they had two children, Shawne (Charles) Whitsell and Evan Charles. While working at Dana, Urban met Jeanette Herron, the love of his life. They were married on March 22, 2003, bringing their families together and creating a blended family that included Ronda Burelison, Darla Oler and Troy Herron.
Urban is survived by his sister, Lois (Charles) Mauller; his children, Shawne (Lance) Whitsell, Evan (Candice) Charles, Ronda (George) Burelison, Darla (Kenny) Oler; his grandchildren, Mason Whitsell, Morgan (Joel) Parker, Marek Whitsell, Caitlyn (Jared) Hentz, Corey Charles, Colby Charles, Jason (Rebecca) Burelison, James Burelison, Emily (Nathan) Hart, Katie Blunk, Dylan (Heather) Blunk; his niece, Samantha Hart; his nephews, Troy Mauller and Harrison Hart; and his many great-grandchildren.
Urban was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mary (Barry) Charles; his sister, Lisa (Charles) Hart; his brother, Alan Charles; the love of his life, Jeanette (Herron) Charles; his first wife, Linda (Cornett) Charles; and his step-son Troy Herron.
Urban will be remembered for the memories he created, the friendships he built, his dedication to his passions, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his memory will live on in the stories shared by the lives he touched.
A private memorial service celebrating Urban’s life will be held at the family’s convenience.
Urban Winkler Liberty Funeral Home is honored to assist Urban’s family with his arrangements.
